Bruce Dickinson underwent hip replacement surgery

Speech on the Download Festival radio show and Kylie Olsson, o Bruce Dickinson announced that he had undergone hip replacement surgery.

In addition, the frontman of Iron Maiden reported that he also suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon shortly before the start of the band’s final tour, an event he described as “particularly painful”:

“I did the surgery a few months ago. I had five and a half inches of titanium implanted in my leg. Imagine me constantly running and jumping on stage while I was fencing left-handed for 40 years and my body was exhausted.

Two years ago, before the start of our last tour, my Achilles tendon tore. It was scary. But I fixed it with surgery and continued touring for months. But I couldn’t walk normally or run all the time. I adjusted my movements on stage and no one noticed. I was surprised.

I did the entire tour in South America and ran the whole time. But my power has hurt me enough.”

Dickinson, who was known to suffer from osteoarthritis, also explained that he had recently begun intensive training and fencing programs, taking advantage of the pandemic restrictions imposed in Paris, where he lives, while seeing his doctor last October had asked for an operation because he wanted to be able to go on tour with Iron Maiden again soon.

“But being the eternal optimist that I am, this was the best thing I could do. It’s amazing how I can do exercises and lift weights, things I’ve been doing since I was 16 or 17. It’s amazing what our bodies are capable of.”
