“Electra” with Lena Papaligoura

His tragedy Sophocles “Electra”, the late masterpiece of the great tragedian, will be presented in summer 2023 by the Ars Aeterna art association in collaboration with the Theater der Neue Welt. In Sophocles’ Electra, Electra and Orestes avenge the murder of Agamemnon by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus and repay blood for blood. Heavily influenced by his time (late 5th century), Sophocles is possessed of a spirit of questioning, investigation and deconstruction. He tells the myth of Atreides through the subjective view of Electra. A look shattered by pain and grief that reflects, magnifies and sometimes distorts the reality around him.

This is a really grim reality. A universe drowning in corruption and injustice. A completely anti-heroic world where everything has been turned upside down and the order of things has been dangerously shaken. In this world, Elektra chooses to be the only cell of living consciousness that will not stop denouncing immorality and hypocrisy forever. She refuses to accept and legitimize the evil regime of the usurpers, and her voice is a courageous and dynamic act of active resistance, a constant, disturbing and unrelenting reminder of the need to redress the terrible injustice.

This obsessive attachment to their principles and ideals will undoubtedly wear them down too. Immobile in space and time, she oscillates between the terrible past and the uncertain future that lies ahead, unable to take a single step forward. She reveals her pain on the threshold of the palace, transforms herself into a living Erinya for the criminals and eagerly awaits the arrival of her savior brother. Her pain, grief, and unquenchable thirst for revenge seem to create a landscape of quicksand that slowly swallows her, but she can’t help it. Isolated and immobile, between wear and tear, a living dead, she refuses to compromise and submit, her only weapon being her voice, her truth and her faith.

Erietta Manouri (Chrysothemis) and Lena Papaligoura (Elektra) about the projects

The mysterious and unexpected end of the tragedy does not foreshadow a happy ending, neither for the heroine nor for the passions of her household. Sophocles takes no position on the question of matricide, which preoccupied both Aeschylus and Euripides. As cameraman, he focuses his lens on Elektra’s face, which remains strangely still after the wild celebration of the success of the revenge plan, a hollow mask that one has the feeling that she will never speak again.
