Filareti Komninos in “Suddenly Last Summer” at Neos Akademi

Happy Productions presents the masterpiece of the international repertoire, “SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER” by Tennessee Williams, directed by Lillys Melemé and music by Stavros Gasparatos, at the Neo Akademi. With the Philaretis Komnenos in the iconic role of Mrs. Venable, the Anastasia Pandousi in the role of Katherine, the Dimitris Tsiklis in the role of the psychiatrist, the director herself Lilly Meleme in the role of Mrs. Holly and the Paris Leontio in the role of George.

This enigmatic and self-analytical play by the great American author was written in 1958 and premiered on Broadway that same year to great acclaim. A year later it was made into a film starring Katharine Hepburn Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. Taylor won a Golden Globe for her performance and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress alongside Katharine Hepburn.

Filareti Komnenou in the role of Mrs. Venable

The play explores themes such as family, sexuality, madness. Through intense dialogue and shocking scenes, the complex relationships between characters are highlighted and how memories and truths can affect their lives.

The rich and domineering Mrs. Venable (Filareti Komnenos) pathetically idolized her poet son Sebastian, and every summer the two traveled together. Last summer, however, for the first time it was not him who accompanied him on his vacation, but rather his young cousin Catherine (Anastasia Padousi), who took on the role that she had monopolized until then.

However, that fateful summer, Sebastian died under mysterious circumstances. When a shocked Catherine tells the truth about his death, Mrs. Venable refuses to believe her and tries to convince/bribe respected neurosurgeon John Kukrovits (Dimitris Tsiklis) to classify her as psychotic and perform a lobotomy.

The doctor shows composure, prudence and superiority, unfazed by the lure of money and Mrs. Venable’s blackmails, and tries to understand Catherine’s position.

The girl will lean on him and trust him as he slowly sinks into the shadowy and mysterious world that surrounds the Venable family.

What really happened last summer? What secret lay behind his death that should remain hidden?
