A tense, atmospheric novel about the many contradictions of European identity, centered on an old hotel struggling to find the balance between present and past.

A writer books a room in the imposing but run-down Grand Hotel Europa to overcome it separation with the love of his life. His memories take him to the Genoa of their first acquaintance, to their passionate encounters in Venice and to their exciting trips abroad Malta, Palmaria, Portovenere and Cinque Terre as they searched for Caravaggio’s last painting. During his stay, he is fascinated by the secrets of the Grand Hotel Europa and its eccentric characters, while globalization lurks outside the doors, erasing the last traces of its former splendor.

Cinematic, lyrical and full of humor, a masterful novel about a Europe that, like the employees and tenants of the Grand Hotel Europa, has already seen its best days.

(…) reminds me of Nabokov, Tom Wolfe, Baudrillard, Umberto Eco, Wes Anderson… A novel of irrepressible vitality.
