Patchwork art stops at the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition

From March 26th to April 21st, 2024 at the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Hatzimichalis” of the City of Athens.

The art of patchwork, the magic of fabrics, threads, colors and flowers, is presented by the City of Athens in the group exhibition of patchwork works “Flower Power” organized by
the Cultural, Sports and Youth Organization of the City of Athens and the Hellenic Patchwork Association, from March 26 to April 21, 2024 at the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Angeliki Hatzimichalis” of the City of Athens.

In Exhibition will be introduced About 200 works by artists from the member countries of the European Patchwork Federation (European Quilting Association), which also includes the Hellenic Patchwork Association (Greece, Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Sweden).

The Projects of the local regional associations, which will be exhibited under the theme Flower Power – The Power of Flowers, follows specific guidelines set by the European Federation and will be presented for the first time in Birmingham in August 2023 at the largest relevant European exhibition. Then they began their journey between member countries, which will last two years, arriving in our city to be exhibited at the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Hatzimihalis”, with the aim, on the one hand, to highlight community and cooperation between peoples , on the other hand, the promotion of the European folk art of patchwork in a museum that acts as a hub for the promotion of European culture.

The title of the exhibition recalls the flower children, the hippies of the 60s who wanted to remind us of the symbolism of flowers as elements of nature with a diverse power of renewal and hope for the world, especially after the great adventure of the pandemic and the war , which still prevails on European soil.

Visitors to the exhibition “Flower Power” will feel like strolling in gardens with colors and shapes, without suspecting that these are creations made of fabric and threads, while some will use their imagination to look back to the 60s .

Exhibition editor: Stavroula Pisimisi, folklorist, director of the museum

This will be organized in the museum area during the exhibition laboratory on Saturday, April 20, at 12 p.m. so that visitors with registration forms can learn about the art of patchwork from the Greek artists who will exhibit their works.
