“Perlibin and Belissa”: New dates and times for Lorca’s stage work

Directed by Dimitris Tarlow.

“I love him. I feel like I’m a different woman.

What is true, what is false? What is a dream and what is reality? What is poetry and what is prose necessity? What remains hidden and what comes to light? What is the Love – something tangible or something imaginary? The Spanish poet and playwright, revered by Greek audiences, returns to his favorite theme, unrequited love, with this 1929 work, delivering a tender and painful story from beginning to end, written in the unique language full of dreamy images and lyricism.

Erotic hallelujah Lorca characterizes his work in the subtitle, revealing on the one hand the connection of his story with the highly conventional and standardized farce readings of the Spanish 18th century, and on the other hand his intention to transcend this tradition in a heretical and poetic way.

The middle-aged Perliblin (a name given to the lovelorn old men of folk comedy) is persuaded to marry one of his young neighbors so that he will not be left alone and helpless in old age; Belisa is persuaded to marry her rich neighbor in order to become more desirable than other men thanks to the beauty that her husband’s wealth will give her. But she longs for a love her own age and is fascinated by the mysterious stranger who hides in her garden at night and writes her fiery letters. Unable to bear living without Belissa’s love, Perliblin kills the nameless lover while Belissa learns the truth by losing both husband and lover…
