Plot

The “American” John Stothison is a Greek immigrant who returns to his island after 25 years, but no one recognizes him. He wanders alone on the dock, roaming the alleys of the small neighborhood and the ruins of his father’s house. The only thing that gives him hope is love: the hope that his beloved might still be there, waiting for him. Just like Odysseus, who upon his return found his lost Ithaca in the eyes of his faithful Penelope.

“The American” by Alexandros Papadiamantis could be any immigrant’s story. The same and unchanged applies to countless personal and family dramas that Greece experienced during this time, but also in all other times. There were countless young people who, faced with unrelenting poverty, gave up everything and plunged into the unknown: Europe, America, Australia… The “American” of Papadiamantis is nothing more than an immigrant from all over the world.

Director’s note

The actor in “The American” interprets a persona of Papadiamantis as the narrator. He looks into the action and, with the help of music and sounds created specifically for the show and performed live by a musician, transforms himself into all the faces he tells. The result is a continuous dialogue of the Skiatian author’s idiosyncratic language, coupled with contemporary live music: the universe of atmospheric sounds created by the special use of the piano played as Sanduri is complemented by the richness and power of the exciting Padiamantic language . Actors and viewers are invited to take part in the mysterious and enchanting world of Papadiamantis, full of poetry and lyricism.
