Elephas tiliensis (Dimitris Agartzidis and Despina Anastasoglou) present for the first time on the modern stage the Theater of the Mountain and the work of Giorgos Kotzioulas, the man who founded the Popular Theater in Epirus, with actors themselves, the rebels of the VIII Division OF THE GREEK POLICE. “The Magic Mountains” tells the story of guerrilla theater during the time of the National Resistance, in which many well-known later actors “starred,” and focuses on the magical moment when utopia took shape.

The popular theater emerged from the needs of the liberation struggle: educating the people about the goals of the struggle, recruiting, free criticism and entertainment. It is worth noting that this theater was one of the few theaters where men, women and children equally participated in a social event. The popular theater arises from the people and is aimed at the people who enjoy seeing themselves in the works.

While Kotzioulas propagates the new ideas and values of the National Resistance, he connects the resistance with the robbery of 1821, but at the same time does not shy away from directly criticizing the guerrillas. Questions surrounding our national identity, its fluidity and our difficulty in coming into contact with the traumas of our modern history, such as those of the occupation and civil war, come to life through Kotzioulas’ work, underscoring its timelessness to this day. The show combines documentary theater with fiction, traditional epirotic songs and songs of the time with folk theater.

The stage of the Theater of the New World is transformed into a mountainside with wild vegetation in Vourgareli on Pindus, where the plays were first performed. The wild nature of the mountains penetrates the interior of the theater and transforms it into a threshold for the viewer’s encounter with mountain theater, which has not yet found a place in modern performance art.
