“The Pillar of the Twin Children” is the exhibition of the month at the National Archaeological Museum

The Invisible Museum is the successful operation of the National Archaeological Museum, which shows selected antiquities from the world of warehouses.

After dozens of objects presented so far, the Invisible Museum welcomes “the column of twin babies”. That is a Fragment of a tombstone Collected from a Menidi stream by a stone collector and delivered to the museum in November 2008.

The fragment is preserved in relief two shorn twins on the lap of a female figure and is probably part of a tombstone placed in the grave of a woman who died in childbirth.

This is the only funerary relief in the ancient Greek world with twin children in the same arm, an element that suggests their shared fate as orphans.

The “Twin Babies” column is presented in the “Altar Hall” (No. 34) from Thursday, March 21st to Monday, May 13th, 2024.

On March 31st, April 14th and 28th and on Sunday May 12th as well as on March 27th, April 10th and 24th and on Wednesday, May 8th, archaeologists from the museum welcome visitors to the exhibition area and talk to them about the strange history of the transmission of the precious fragment, about the ancient Greek myths of the twin gods, about the lives of children and child mortality in ancient Greece.
