VETERAN TUAREG ROCK COLLECTIVE FOUND

The members of the Tuareg rock collective Tinariwen, once exiled rebel superstars of world music, have led a wild life since 1979, when the band formed on the border between Mali and Algeria. Its founder was the guitarist and singer Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, the son of a murdered Tuareg rebel, who built his first guitar out of an oil can, a stick and a bicycle brake cable. Tinariwen spent much of the 1980s in exile, perfecting her music, as their leader’s home country of Mali was in rebellion. Their songs have a central theme of the Tuareg and their homeland. The band began attracting attention in the ’90s and international interest peaked with the release of their first studio album, The Radio Tisdas Sessions, in 2001. This was followed by the extremely successful albums “Amassakoul” (2004) and “Aman Iman”. (2007), which was celebrated by Thom Yorke, Robert Plant, Brian Eno and Carlos Santana. Her soulful grooves and signature guitar work have also earned the admiration of Wilco, Cat Power, Bon Iver and Jack White.

More than four decades after their founding, the wandering blues musicians of the Sahara, as they are known, continue to be in the spotlight, giving a voice to the Tuareg people and winning over more and more listeners with their innovative Assouf sound (nostalgia for Tamashek). Combination of traditional West African and Arabic music with blues, folk and rock influences from Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Santana and Country.

True rock ‘n’ roll revolutionaries, Tinariwen has collaborated with major musical names such as Mark Lanegan and Kurt Wile, performed over 1,100 concerts worldwide and shared the stage with highly regarded artists such as Carlos Santana and Robert Plant. Among other things, they have released nine studio albums, three of which were nominated for Grammys, including “Tassili”, which won the award for best world music album in 2012.
